Last Friday the Honeysuckle Class used up lots of the leftover bananas and blueberries from Food Dudes to make banana and blueberry bread. We then took over the staff room and used our iPads to research the science of baking. We researched what baking powder does, how does heat actually bake cakes and bread and lots of other interesting pieces of information! We then practiced our photography by staging our best photo to show off our cake. We used different props to try make our cakes look even better. The end results!

We've been busy in Honeysuckle this week for Science Week 2023! Monday - Coke and MentosOn Monday Honeysuckle researched the Mentos and Diet Coke experiement. We learned that it was a physical reaction even though most of us predicted that it was a chemical reaction. We learned that it was happening due to the rough surface of the mentos giving the CO2 plenty of places to attach to. We used the scientific method to hypothesize other rough materials that might cause the same reaction and decided to try it with sand. Unfortunately our experiments did not go to plan. Our sand was wet and clumped when we tried putting it into the bottle and we couldn’t get all 6 mentos into the bottle before the reaction started. This meant we went back to class, evaluated our experiment and what we will change when we repeat the experiment on Tuesday. Tuesday - Repeating Coke and Mentos + Paper BridgeFor homework on Tuesday, the Honeysuckle class researched the Paper Bridge Experiment. They investigated the different methods for creating a bridge and sketched a plan to try out in class. Each pair was given 3 pieces of paper and were not allowed to use any additional materials. Our winning bridge came from Euan and Harvey who designed a bridge that supported 4.7kg of books using only 3 pieces of A4 paper! Impressive engineering!
We also successfully redid our experiment from yesterday and found that sand was more effective for the experiment! The reaction lasted longer, went higher and also left less diet coke in the bottle than when we used mentos. Not what we expected! This week we started training to be playground leaders on yard. We'll be taking turns to lead and supervise games during yard for junior infants to 2nd class! We discussed making sure the younger children were being safe and keeping them active during their yard time. We were also lucky to have Donal Lock from the Humanist Society of Ireland visit us on Friday to speak to us about humanism and what it means. We love to hear about other worldviews in PETNS so it was great to have this visit!
Honeysuckle are hard at work at musical compositions. We listened to some classic pieces of music written for horror movies and talked about the way the composer used instruments to convey certain feelings. We have broken up into groups and each group decided on a theme for our composition. Some of us are composing running through the woods at night and some are composing a walk through a haunted house!
We are working on projects about China at the moment in 6th class. Eoin has brought in a VR headset and we'll all get a chance to watch a VR documentary about Shanghai over the next few days!
Lavender and Honeysuckle went to the hall on Thursday to take part in our annual European Day of Languages quiz. Every year we celebrate languages, cultures and countries from around the world in this fun quiz! Honeysuckle have started learning tennis during PE. We've been practicing basic ball control, then simple underarm hits and last week we used the chains on yard as pretend nets to start practicing playing with a partner!
